About
Marko Ahteensuu works as a Research Fellow at the Public Choice Research Centre (PCRC, Sept. 2008-), University of Turku, Finland. He completed his doctorate in 2008 (Philosophy, University of Turku).
Ahteensuu has examined the issues of risk and uncertainty in the context of modern agri-biotechnology with the focus on the precautionary approach and participatory decision-making practices. He has worked in ELSA biotechnology projects at the Department of Philosophy, University of Turku (between 2003 and 2006), and visited departments and research institutes abroad: [1] Department of Philosophy, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA (Jan. 2010-Feb. 2011); [2] International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria (June-Aug. 2007); [3] Department of Philosophy, National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan (Sept. 2005-May 2006); [4] Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS), Graz, Austria (Oct. 2004-July 2005). His publications include papers in The Journal of Value Inquiry, Environmental Values, Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, Trames, Science Studies, and Sociology Compass. A review paper (co-authored with Per Sandin) on the precautionary principle appeared in Springer Handbook of Risk Theory in Feb. 2012. A co-edited book (with Helena Siipi), Muuntogeenisen ruoan etiikka [Ethics of GM Food], was published by UNIpress in Nov. 2010. Ahteensuu lectures in ethics and the philosophy of science at the University of Turku and elsewhere. He is a member of the Board for Gene Technology (Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland, July 2010-June 2015), a member of the Advisory Board on Biotechnology (Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland, Feb. 2011-Dec. 2013 [a vice member, Feb. 2008-Dec. 2010]), and a member of the Nordic Network for Political Ethics (Jan. 2010-).
