The motivation behind the study is to define generic urban areas formed by actual user experience and different from administrative division to improve urban management of the city territory. We employ mixed methods approach to account both for users’ practices in urban space, based on analysis of check-in data, and users’ perception of urban space, based on analysis of mental maps. The clustering algorithm is based on spatial and social proximity indexes and has been validated through the results of the mental mapping survey. The dataset of check-ins is retrieved from VKontakte social network, the most popular one for St. Petersburg and for Russia, and comprises 6128 venues with 763079 check-ins collected for December 2017–February 2018 time period. The mental mapping has been conducted within 39 users of different age and gend...

Studies of emotional response towards the city space have recently gained popularity within digital humanities. In the paper we present a new system which allows collecting data on urban emotions - an interactive platform called Imprecity, which has been recently developed at ITMO University and integrated into a wider framework of Smart Saint-Petersburg project supported by city administration of Russian city Saint-Petersburg. When authorized through social networks Imprecity user receives a possibility to place emoji on St.Petersburg map as well as write comments on each emotion. Emotions are divided into 5 groups based on the typology of basic emotions defined by Paul Ekman - joy, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear. Imprecity functions as a mobile and desktop version of a website and will be further developed as a mobil...

We consider a food service as an urban place with social and symbolic features and we track how popularity (number of reviews) and rating of food venues in Google maps correlate with formation of food venues clusters. We also analyze environmental parameters which correlate with clusterization of food services, such as functional load of the surrounding built environment and presence of public spaces. We observe that main predictors for food services clusters formation are shops, services and offices, while public spaces (parks and river embankments) do not draw food venues. Popular and highly rated food venues form clusters in historic city centre which collocate with existing creative spaces, unpopular and low rated food venues do not form clusters and are more widely spread in per...

Public services are considered as FMCG, cultural and recreational venues people use in everyday life. We consider the quality of public services through a set of objective (availability, accessibility, variability) and subjective (users perception) indicators. We measure the quality of public service infrastructure based on the data from open digital sources, such as Technical Passports of Houses from Open Data of Saint-Petersburg Platform, Google Maps, Google Places, and validate usability of services based on a sociological survey. We illustrate our analysis with maps which provide a detailed view on the localization, accessibility, variability of the service infrastructure. We conclude that public service infrastructure in Kronstadt does not address the needs of the dormitory areas which make up one third of all citizens of the city.
